Morning Boost
A daily practice for principals who want to show up for their staff before the first bell.

A daily practice for principals who want to show up for their staff before the first bell. Each morning, draw a prompt card and use it to greet staff, ask a question, or share a quick moment of recognition as you move through the building.
Why try it
Daily greetings are one of the simplest teacher morale boosters a principal can build into the week. Small, consistent check-ins help staff feel seen, build trust over time, and set a positive tone across the building. The printable card deck gives you a ready-made prompt every morning so you never have to guess what to say.

Things you'll need

Instructions
Print and prep
Print the 32-card deck and cut the cards apart. Store them in a basket, jar, or clipped on a ring somewhere you'll see them first thing in the morning. The list version works too if you prefer to store on your phone or skip the cutting.
Draw a card and make your rounds
Each morning, pull a card at random and take it into the building. The prompt might be an action (offer high-fives, leave sticky notes, hand out a small treat) or a conversation starter to use as you check in with staff in classrooms, the lounge, or hallways.
Capture and share
When you catch a great moment, snap a photo or jot a quick note. Share highlights in your staff newsletter, on the lounge bulletin board, or on school social media (with permission) to extend the recognition beyond the hallway.
Activity variations
Adapt to fit your school's vibe, budget, and setting.
Team boost
Invite your assistant principal, instructional coach, or counselor to each draw a card and make their own rounds on the same morning.
Theme weeks
Group cards by type for a week at a time: an entire week of question prompts, or a week focused on recognition. Letting staff know the week's theme can build a bit of anticipation.

Additional tips for running this resource.
Leader Tip #1
Swap cards regularly
Rotate in new prompts every week or two to keep the practice fresh. You can also invite staff to submit their own greeting ideas.
Leader Tip #2
Aim for 2-3 times a week
If you can't get out every morning, two or three visits a week is enough to keep the momentum going.
Leader Tip #3
Note what you notice
As you make your rounds, take a mental note of staff doing something worth calling out. Bring those observations back to your next staff meeting.
