Celebrating the First Day: Fun Ways to Welcome Students
A menu of easy, high-energy ideas to make your school's first day feel like a celebration.

The first day of school sets the tone for everything that follows. When students walk in and feel genuinely welcomed, they carry that into their classrooms, their friendships, and their year.
Why try it
You don't need a big budget or a coordinated production. A few intentional moments, the right people in the right spots, and a little creative energy go a long way toward building a school culture where students feel like they belong.
Instructions
Pick your 2 to 3 ideas
Scroll through the variations below and choose the ones that match your school's personality, your staff's energy, and what's realistic to pull off.
Assign roles and gather supplies
Decide who handles what — teachers, staff, PTO, student council, and others can all play a part. Figure out who's the music DJ, who's greeting at the door, who's running the photo booth. Make a simple supply list based on your chosen ideas and pull everything together the day before.
Walk through it at your back-to-school staff meeting
Share the plan with your team so everyone knows where to be and what to do. A quick run-through builds excitement and makes the morning feel effortless.
Activity variations
Adapt to fit your school's vibe, budget, and setting.
Grand entrance
Roll out a red carpet, set up bubble machines, and add a photo op spot with props like silly glasses or "1st Day" signs. Have staff line up to cheer and clap as students walk in.
Music and hallway cheer squad
Blast upbeat music at the entrance and station staff and older students throughout the hallways to offer high-fives and encouragement as students make their way in. Invite staff to dance, sing, or form a clap tunnel for extra energy.
Decorative displays and sidewalk chalk
Deck out your doors with balloons, streamers, and banners, and cover your sidewalks with colorful messages like "Welcome back!" and "You belong here" before students arrive.
Handwritten welcome notes and small gifts
Have staff write short, encouraging notes to hand out at the door alongside a small gift like a pencil, eraser, or sticker. Personal and low cost.
Mascot meet-and-greet
Bring out your school mascot to high-five, hug, or take photos with students at arrival.
Name tag connection
Pass out fun name tags or stickers at the door to help students and staff quickly connect by name on day one.
Staff in costume
Surprise students with teachers and staff in inflatable T-Rex suits or silly hats for instant laughter and smiles.
Welcome raffle
Give each student a raffle ticket as they enter and draw winners for small prizes throughout the day to keep the excitement going.
Morning greeting stations
Position staff at key points throughout the building to greet students by name or with a personalized welcome as they settle in.

Additional tips for running this resource.
Leader Tip #1
Cover the building
Assign each grade-level team to a specific entrance or zone and create a short staff schedule so everyone has a role and no spot gets missed.
